My name is Zoe Murphy

I'm a trumpet player, composer, and educator based in Boston, MA. I specialize in improvisation and a variety of musical styles.

About Me.

Zoe  is an innovator and rising star in the musical community who resides in Boston, Massachusetts. She identifies as a trumpet player, composer, and educator with a calling for social justice, elevating the BIPOC community.  As an internationally recognized performer, she has played and studied with a diverse, and elite group of musicians around the world. From San Nicolas, Aruba's International Jazz Festival to cities and towns throuhout New England, she has played and been mentored by both her hero's and rising colleagues in the music industry.

 

As a bandleader, Zoe's leading album Pink, set to release in June 2024,  highlights the trauma and identity issues of a bi racial person living in America. Also a member of the eight piece musical collective Finding Frances; she is featured on the groups premier album, for Flowers Yet to Bloom. Finding Frances' mission explores reconnection, mental wellness, and love for oneself and community through folk, indie-rock, and chamber pop styles. Additionally, Zoe plays with various musician booking agencies that perform up scale corporate and private events throughout New England. Her sound echoes in the Boston area especially from playing various jazz festivals and local venues. 

 

Along with performing, Zoe currently works full time as a Student Success Advisor at the Berklee College of Music. Murphy passionately advises students for both  short and long term career success. She's worked as a brass instructor at the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra where she teaches, recruits, and mentors New Englands most talented students. All while winning multiple grants for her work and approaches all of her roles though the lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Murphy received a B.M in jazz studies-trumpet from Indiana University in 2020, and a M.M in jazz performance-trumpet from New England Conservatory in 2022. 

Education

2016-2020

Indiana University; Jacobs School of Music

Receiving a bachelors of music in jazz studies; trumpet, Zoe gained a foundation and deep passion of jazz and improvisation. She specializes in music of the African American diaspora . At Jacobs, she started her journey as a composer. Gaining proficiency both in piano and an expertise in music theory. Her notable mentors included John Raymond, Wayne Wallace, and Walter Smith III.

2020-2022

New England Conservatory 

With a master of music degree; in jazz performance; trumpet, Zoe sharpened her skills as a composer, trumpet player, educator and rising young professional in Boston, MA. She composed and performed her debut album Pink while studying and performing with some of her life long heroes and inspirations.  Notable mentors include Jason Moran, Steve Emery, Miguel Zenon, Frank Carlberg and Jason Palmer.
